7. Eat more fruit and veggies

Aim for five portions of a wide variety of fruit and veg every day and try to make this constitute around a third of your daily food consumption, advises Croft o'Halloran.

  • Try to eat different colored fruits and vegetables to get a wide range of vitamins and minerals in your diet and aim for one portion from each color group
  • Add vegetables and pulses to stews and casseroles to bulk out meals and add a portion
  • Don't go crazy with dried fruits -- they do count but they also contain a lot of hidden sugars, salt and calories
